Nootropic Review: B4

My experience with B4 overall has been phenomenal. Not only in scenarios that it was designed for, but others as well and I’m excited to finally share my experience.

But first,

What is B4?

B4 is a nootropic formula specifically designed by Ramp Health to combat social anxiety. It combines 7 ingredients in a powder form coming in single serving packets.

What can you expect from it?

This is a formula that was made to crush anxiety, so you can expect it to do just that. It does so by targeting multiple mechanisms and neurotransmitter systems, but not in a way that leaves you sedated. A few of the ingredients provide a mild boost in mood and energy, leaving you with (in my experience) a calm cool focus.

Let’s briefly look at the ingredients:

  1. L-Theanine: well known for its calming effect by modulating the glutamatergic system
  2. Epoxymine: an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and receptor enhancing properties
  3. Lemon Balm: inhibits GABA-Transaminase, enhancing GABA’s action
  4. Eria Jarensis: TAAR1 agonist, enhances monoamine release
  5. Ashwagandha: well known for its anti-stress effect, wide range of mechanisms
  6. Agmatine: potential antidepressant effects, NMDAR antagonism
  7. Oroxylum Indicum (from Sabroxy): dopamine reuptake inhibitor, increases BDNF

There’s a lot going on mechanism wise, but the main things to notice are a slight increase in monoamine activity (dopamine, norepinephrine), increase in GABA activity, decrease in glutamate activity, and a mix of other anti-inflammatory/stress mechanisms. All targeted to reduce anxiety and support a slight mood boost.

Well, does it?

In my experience, yes. I tried this formula in a variety of different scenarios and my experience was overwhelmingly positive.

One of my favorite (and least expected) use cases was as a pre-workout nootropic. I had heard from others that they really enjoyed it pre-workout, but I was skeptical because it should in theory have an inhibiting effect. This wasn’t my experience though, I was locked in my whole lift and was hitting PRs.

As for other use cases I tried outside of a ‘social context’, I enjoyed using this formula before sitting down to do work (both deep focused work, and busy work). I found it really easy to get and stay focused, even during mundane work.

The reason it took me so long to get this review out is because I had to put it to the test for its intended purpose, social anxiety. I had a presentation scheduled for this week, so I needed to wait a few weeks to put B4 to the true test.

Not shockingly, my presentation went fantastic. Any nerves I had (pretty minimal, but still there) melted away shortly after taking B4, and it was smooth sailing for my presentation. It overall was a 10/10 experience for me. I will note I had some caffeine as well, so I found it to pair nicely with that. Not exactly a shock since L-Theanine alone pairs well with caffeine, but worth mentioning.

The ‘mood bump’ you get after taking it was noticeable, and I’d likely attribute that to the eria jarensis, agmatine, and sabroxy. These ingredients all provide a boost in monoamine signaling, but it’s not overwhelming like you took a stimulant. Combine that with the calming effect from the rest of the ingredients and it’s a fantastic combo. The best way I can describe the effect it had on me is it promoted ‘a unique calm alertness’.

Since B4 is a powder, I’d be remiss to not touch on the flavors. There’s three and Ill rank them:

  1. Watermelon (easily my favorite, great flavor)
  2. Orange (was good, and i don’t love orange flavors)
  3. Green Apple (it’s fine)

If you’ve tried powder supplements before, you’ll know that it’s tough for a product to be both efficaciously dosed and taste great. B4 hits the mark in my books, at least watermelon and orange. Watermelon is actually tasty, and orange tastes good. Combine that with the fact that it’s efficaciously dosed, and it’s a winner for me in this aspect.

Overall, my experience with B4 was overwhelmingly positive. The effects it had on me were noticeable and I found it useful in various scenarios, including what it was designed for. I only wish I had a wedding to go to so I could have tested it out there.
